MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It’s the third day students in Shelby County Schools missed class this week.
Monday was a holiday, but the rest of the week has been because of icy roads.
SCS students are set to head back to class Thursday.
Now that temperatures are set to drop into the single digits, there’s another concern for students and parents.
Many parents WREG spoke to are extremely concerned about the temperatures for the rest of the week.
If you think it’s bad now, it’s only going to get worse.
Some parents want to know why the districts don’t make the decision earlier to cancel class when they hear about dangerously low temperatures.
Shelby County School board member Stephanie Love says there are many factors that go into school cancellations.
“Basically what we do is day by day announcement and people go out in the community, they go out in the neighborhoods and monitor the streets, the sidewalks and we make the decision day by day basis,” she said.
WREG also reached out to Shelby County School’s district main office to ask how many snow days students get a year, but is still waiting to hear back from them.
Love says because children are in school a half an hour longer, they have nine stock piled days in the school year. It’s up to the superintendent to decide if he wants to use those days for make-up days, which are different from snow days.
