MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some drivers say the city of Memphis needs improvement when it comes to preparing for bad weather.

The Public Works Department has 14 salt spreaders standing by as the city prepares for round two of possible icy conditions.

Crews are already putting brine down. That helps them in the long run when the sleet starts to fall.

“I think we do a good job and we could obviously do a better job as we move forward,” Robert Knecht, deputy director with Memphis Public Works Department, said.

Icy roads could become a problem again for drivers Friday.

Knecht says dealing with these conditions may mean purchasing more equipment in the future.

“We’re looking into snow plows, we are but again it’s a decision that we will have to make over the next year because we won’t get them immediately,” he said.

Knecht says the city didn’t utilize snow plows in the past because of its mild winters. People who live in the metro area want the city to invest in them.

William Robinson says some of the roads in his neighborhood are still Icy and he knows snow plows would help him get out of his driveway easier.

“In some neighborhoods it’s still pretty bad right now and it’s still a lot of people not able to access their jobs so yeah I think they could do better in the neighborhoods as well as all over the city,” he said.

“We have to decide as a city are we interested in clearing more roadways on a regular basis because there’s just a cost to provide that level of service,” Knecht added.

It could cost about $150,000 or more to purchase multiple snow plows.
