Two Memphis women crossed paths as co-workers and forged a friendship that lasted years. When one of them encountered some health challenges, her friend reached out to us to pass it on.

Geneva Murrell and Lisa Drayton’s friendship goes back to 1998 when the two worked at the same job. The former co-workers are now friends and still keep in touch with each other.

“I want to pass it on to a friend of mine. Her name is Lisa Drayton, and I just feel like she needs some help and a little motivation. And she had two strokes in the past. She’s in a wheelchair now, but she’s working her way up out of the wheelchair. She’s trying to make, you know, steps to improve.

“I hope that it will help her. Maybe, you know, get her a couple of sessions of rehabilitation so that, you know, she could keep making steps toward getting out of her wheelchair and getting back up on her feet and doing things for herself,” Geneva said.

We count out the cash and drive to Lisa’s house to surprise her. Lisa thought Geneva was coming to bring lunch. She had no idea $600 was on the plate.

Lisa is grateful for a friend like Geneva who continues to look out for her.

“Well, I’m glad you gave $600 but $100 would have helped. Anything. Thank you. Thank you so much,” Lisa said.

She’ll use the money to help pay bills so she can focus on her recovery as she tries to regain the use of one side of her body.

“I’ve had two strokes.  I’m trying to learn how to walk. My speech is getting a little better. And I still got an attitude,” Lisa said. “So I’m blessed in spite of it all.”
