MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Melting snow and heavy rain: the perfect combination for the Mississippi River to rise quickly, causing flooding throughout the area.
The Mississippi River is already spilling into creeks and flood plains.
Tuesday, the water was posing a threat to many folks in North Memphis.
People at Lucille Price Park got a different view. The Wolf River is overflowing and covering flood plains.
“The water over there, it’s already started coming up,” Rhonda Webster said.
She and her sister, Minnie Means, live on the other side of the river.
“That’s where the flood came up. That’s how far the water came up,” Means said. “Yeah, I am a bit worried. I know we are near the river, but it says it gets flooded every year. I’m like, oh lovely.”
Many stops along the Mississippi River were hit with heavy snow. Memphis saw its share, and Kentucky had up to three feet.
Now all that’s melted over the past few days. Add heavy rain on top of it all, and it’s not a pretty picture.
WREG is told it won’t get as bad as the floods in 2011, but the water could swallow parks, houses, and anything along the edge of the river.
Means and Webster said they’re just keeping their fingers crossed and keeping a lookout, especially with more rain coming our way.
“What can you do to prepare? In this trailer park? What can you do? Nothing,” Webster said.
