COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. — Police said a fight over a cell phone led to a man being stabbed to death in Collierville.

Collierville police told WREG Xavier Jones was killed as the result of a domestic fight in the 400 block of South Center Street.

Police brought Jones’ ex-girlfriend, 23-year-old Brenda Church, in for questioning.

They said they were still investigating to see whether she stabbed Jones in self-defense.

She was released without being charged Thursday afternoon.

David Antell lives right next door to the home where Church lives with her mother and father.

It was the same house where police said she stabbed her ex-boyfriend to death Thursday night.

Police said a fight between Jones and Church over a cell phone escalated and turned deadly.

But Antell said he knows Church and believes she stabbed Jones in self-defense.

He said Jones got physical. “He started throwing furniture around and stuff.”

A woman who lives on the other side of the house has had a stroke and has trouble speaking but told WREG she heard a woman screaming Wednesday night.

Police said Church’s mother and father were home and got involved in the fight too.

To make matters worse, Antell said there were children in the house at the time.

“I went over there pretty much right away to check on the children,” Antell said.

Neighbors we spoke with said if it was self-defense, they hope Church remains free.

“I’m concerned about my friends,” Antell said. “They don’t need this.”

Police said it is possible Church could be charged at a later date.
