MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man was left critically injured after a shooting early Monday morning in the Raleigh area on Interstate 40, according to police.

Police later clarified that the man was injured by shattered glass, not shot, and said he was upgraded to non-critical condition.

Around 2 a.m., officers say they responded to a shooting at I-40 between Austin Peay Highway and Highland Street where they found a man suffering from a cut on the back of his head and his face.

The victim stated he was headed home after leaving Cache 42 located at 4202 Hacks Cross Road in Southeast Shelby County. He says the shooter could have been someone from the restaurant, but he did not see the person shooting at him or the vehicle they were driving.

Reports state that when the shots were being fired the victim slammed on his brakes to avoid being hit by gunfire.

The victim was then taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

This interstate shooting on I-40 marked number 64 for Memphis this year, but an 11% drop from last year at this time, when MPD says the city had 72 interstate shootings.

Overall last year there were 102 shootings on Memphis interstates.
