MEMPHIS, Tenn. — After a deadly weekend in Memphis, Police Director Toney Armstrong didn’t have a solid plan at this point on how to curb the violence.
A 15-year-old girl was shot and killed in her home, a 7-year-old was shot and killed in her own front yard and a 17-year-old was shot and injured in Tom Lee Park.
While Armstrong said he is constantly looking to improve safety following this weekend’s shootings, he does not have specifics on changes the police department will make.
Some said until the city begins to take care of officers and give them better pay, they do not have faith they’ll take care of us.
“A lot of them just don’t care anymore,” one woman said. “They’re being mistreated.”
Armstrong insisted crime is still down in Memphis.
“So far, we’ve had almost a 6-percent reduction in crime,” he told reporters at a news conference on Monday.
Given recent events, some said they found that hard to believe
They said it was even harder to believe their children are safe here.
Anyone with information on any of these crimes should call Crime Stoppers at 528-CASH.
