MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Several students at Northwest Prep Academy were charged for their roles in the BP mob attack.
The school was designated a school for troubled kids who were expelled from other SCS schools.
But you might be surprised to hear Memphis law enforcement agencies are not regularly tasked with patrolling this school.
Neighbors said the increased police presence is making them feel safe, and they hope it lasts.
Days after the attack at the BP on Poplar Avenue, the police presence remained high at Northwest Prep Academy.
Neighbors told WREG they were glad to see it and hope it continues.
“Its common sense you increase your police presence,” one man explained.
He asked us not to share his name but said he grew up in the Chicago housing projects, and he understood what these kids were dealing with.
But he said he wants to see the district step up to protect the public.
WREG made repeated attempts to find out how many district officers were in this school, but SCS said they couldn’t provide those numbers.
Memphis Police and Shelby County Sheriff’s both told us, they don’t have any officers or deputies in the school for troubled students.
People who live in the midtown neighborhood said they hope the extra police on the street stay so this doesn’t happen again.
“Something needs to be done because these kids are out of control,” they explained.
A sentiment shared by several people in the community.
