MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police and Bass Pro Shops’ security were in place at the Pyramid to make Wednesday’s grand opening a safe event.
Bass Pro Shops’ staff were too busy to go on camera with WREG ahead of the event, but said there will be security inside the Pyramid and on the grounds.
Memphis Police Officers were at Bass Pro directing traffic.
WREG also spotted a police camera planted in a parking lot.
Despite recent juvenile attacks and a shooting in a downtown park, Memphis Police were confident Bass Pro’s grand opening would be a safe event.
MPD said in a statement, “An adequate amount of officers will be assisting with outside perimeter security and traffic details for people who will be attending the grand opening of the Bass Pro Shop. We are very prepared and we do not anticipate any issues.”
“The Memphis Police Department is on board,” said Larry Robinson, representing the city’s parking and shuttle system for the event.
“The parking lots are being staffed either by those that own the parking lot or those that are part of our team,” Robinson said.
WREG asked MPD about safety measures and patrols in the coming days and weeks.
MPD sayid Bass Pro’s opening events would be treated like other special event in downtown, with additional police presence.
The statement did not include any information about patrols after this week.
