CLARKSDALE, Miss. — Police said they were still investigating a fatal car crash that claimed the life a 2-year-old.

The little girl was killed after being hit by a truck Sunday afternoon, according to the Clarksdale Police Department.

The Coahoma County Corner said the incident happened around 2:00 p.m. in the 900 block of Spruce Street.

The child died at the scene.

“We hurt and we miss our — oh man. I can’t imagine how I miss her,” Angela Benson said.

Flowers and toys were in the front yard of a home on Spruce Street where 2-year-old Jamiyla Benson played before running into the street.

“I couldn’t get there to her in time,” Benson, Jamiyla’s grandmother, said.

Benson said a truck was barreling down Spruce Street.

“He was going at a rate of speed,” Benson described. “At least about 50 down this little street here.”

Benson said the truck was coming toward her before it swerved.

“Well, I got there like one step from her and that’s when it — Bam. It hit her,” Benson explained.

Jamiyla’s family said the 22-year-old driver, who police later caught up to, sped off.

However, police told WREG the driver contacted and cooperated with them within minutes of the accident.

“I laid her down and I said oh my gosh she– Oh lord she’s gone,” Benson said.

Police said they are looking into this and working to figure out if alcohol played a factor.

“He was moving fast and he, he had to be under some influence or something because I know he heard them hollering,” Benson said.

As they continued to mourn, Jamiyla’s family had a message for the man, they claimed, is responsible for killing their little angel.

“I would want to tell him that you took my grandbaby and that was all I had. That was the only grandbaby I had,” Benson concluded.

No charges have been filed in the case.
