MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A storm of tragic events has rocked a Frayser family and now, a life-long friend is looking for a way to ease the burden.

That’s why she reached out to WREG to see if she can Pass It On.

“Me and Kim been friends for like over 20 years and 2024 has been a rough year for Kim,” Tisha Childs said.

Childs knows the pain of losing a child, so when she heard one of her friends growing up had lost two daughters in one year, she wanted to help.

“I’m hoping the $600 at least bring her closer to having her daughter a funeral, you know? Laying her daughter to rest,” Childs said.

Along with a WREG reporter, Childs went to Kim’s house to give her the money: $300 from WREG and $300 from an anonymous donor.

“It means a lot,” Kim Gaines said. “I thank her for passing it on to me because I really needed the help this time.”

Kim’s 31-year-old daughter, Crystal, passed away from a seizure. Her 28-year-old daughter, Champagne, died in a car accident on April 2.

They had two children each, so now Kim is raising her four grandchildren — two 12-year-olds, a 10-year-old, and a four-year-old.

She’s also trying to pay for funeral expenses.

In the midst of mourning her first daughter’s death, Kim’s husband Michael got sick. She’s now taking care of him as he recovers from surgery.

“He’s getting better,” Kim Gaines said. “He just had brain surgery, so he’s getting better.”

2024 has been a challenging year for Kim but she knows friends like Tisha Childs are there for support and to pass on a little kindness.
