MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman raised concerns about bus safety after a Durham school bus reportedly backed into her car in the middle of the street Thursday.
“I’m laying on my horn like, ‘Oh my God, she’s coming toward me,’ and it was too late at that point,” the woman told WREG.
She did not want to be identified, because the accident is under investigation.
The woman captured photos of the damage.
The woman said she was driving on Elysian Drive to take her daughter to school.
She was behind a school bus.
Durham confirmed the driver was planning to turn right but noticed a truck in the way.
That’s when the woman said the driver put the bus in reverse and slammed into the woman’s car.
“It came back pretty hard on me,” she said.
The woman said she spent the morning in the hospital, getting her neck checked out.
She had a sprain, but her daughter was not hurt.
She said she wants to see some major changes to improve school bus safety, like improved background checks or more training.
“It could have been worse, and I see this all too often,” the woman said.
Several months ago, Durham said it upped its background check procedures following the arrest of a driver with pot on board.
Durham said the driver in Thursday’s wreck was re-trained and will be back on her normal route tomorrow.
Durham said emergency crews checked the driver and the children on the bus, but no one was hurt.
Thursday, Durham could not provide WREG with the number of bus accidents on Shelby County Schools’ routes this school year.
The company claimed it would get us those numbers soon.
