OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. — An off-duty Shelby County Deputy was found bleeding on the hood of his truck Sunday morning.

This happened in the Byhalia/Malone area of Olive Branch, Mississippi around 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

Off-duty Deputy John Checchia told detectives he was assaulted by three men for having a Shelby County Sheriff’s Office sticker on his car.

Checchia had severe head injuries and stomach injuries and was airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in stable condition.

At this time, Deputy Checchia is relieved of duty without pay after being arrested for a DUI charge in April.

At that time, he was found asleep, with his truck still in drive and his foot on the break on Macon Road and Germantown Parkway.
