MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Chamber of Commerce said it’s always working to make the city a better place and they have some big goals to make it happen in 2015.

They told WREG one of those is to increase the number of middle class jobs by 10%.

“I want her to grow up to be somebody,” said Tiffany Adams referring to her 4-year-old daughter.

“Things are looking very good,” said the President of the Memphis Chamber of Commerce Phil Trenary.

He said halfway through the year the city is on the right track.

“We’re projecting 7,400 new and retained jobs this year,” he told WREG.

Earlier this week, Cummins Incorporated announced the massive engine company was not only staying in Memphis but expanding.

It’s adding 70 jobs and Trenary said we can expect to hear more of this.

“We have 27 projects in the pipeline right now,” he said.

However it hasn’t all been great news.

Earlier this month Conduit Global announced it was laying off nearly 600 employees at its Cordova location.

“We’re already talking to at least 3 different companies that can replace the workers that were lost at Conduit,” said Trenary.

He didn’t go into specifics but said their targeting sustainable jobs.

“We’re focusing on advanced manufacturing,” he explained.

On Friday the state of Tennessee also announced Shelby County has had more than 1,100 new small business filings so far this year.
