SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — With school officially out for summer a lot of kids are gearing up for summer camp.

But not all families can afford it.

WREG met a man who was set to host a free camp for kids to help give them a leg up in tech before they started high school.

Chandler Bryant got a sneak peek Thursday of what his upcoming computer camp is all about.

He’s one of eight students nominated by Desoto County Schools to be a part of the computer camp Mark Bichon organized.

“In the school system, installing components is just not taught,” he said.

Bichon told WREG he was a self proclaimed computer nerd.

Repairing them, he said, shouldn’t be that hard for people to learn.

“It’s like changing a tire on your car. Everybody should know how to change a tire, or the oil in their car. Everyone should know how to put memory in their computer,” Bichon explained.

He created this camp for kids who might not have the highest tech stuff at home, but had the passion to learn as much as possible.

Just like Bryant.

Bichon said during the camp he would teach all of these kids to build their own computer, and then let them take it home.

Chandler hoped this experience would help him work toward his goal of one day finding a job in the tech workforce.

“I’d like to become a software engineer,” he said.

And Bichon said all he wanted to do was to help make that happen.

“I’m going to have seven kids in Desoto County who can say, ‘hey, look what I’ve done!'” he said.
