BOSTON — A woman was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries on Friday after she was struck by a broken bat at Fenway Park.
According to CBS Boston, during the second inning A’s third baseman Brett Lawrie’s bat shattered just above the handle, sending the end soaring into the stands.
The woman, who was sitting in the first few row along third base was hit and severely injured.
She was hurt so bad, Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com reported fans were taking off their shirts and handing them to medics to try help stop the bleeding.
She reportedly even lost consciousness for a short time.
The game was delayed as paramedics rushed the woman off the field in front of a silent crowd.
“Certainly our prayers go out to the woman that was struck with the bat, her and her family. A scary moment certainly,” said Red Sox Manager John Farrell during post-game interviews. “Our concerns are with her and her family.”
A Red Sox representative reportedly left the field with the injured woman and remained with the family at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
