MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The FedEx St. Jude Classic gave the City of Memphis quite a business boom.
People came from everywhere to watch the tournament.
We spoke with people from Illinois and even North Carolina.
Many were shocked to learn how much money this tournament brings into the city.
“We have an economic impact of about $35 million,” said Phil Cannon, the Tournament Director.
More than 150 golfers participated in the FedEx St. Jude Classic at Southwind.
Chuck Wilkinson said he came every year, but this was his first year bringing his son.
“I’m bringing my son out today to watch some of the golfers and get him interested in the game. But it’s a great opportunity for Memphis and St. Jude,” he said.
Each year, the event helps raise millions of dollars for the hospital.
Kevin Kane, the President of the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, liked the fact that this tournament doesn’t just benefit the city on a local level.
“I think whenever you can align yourself with the PGA tour, to have Memphis as one of those stops, it’s obviously good for our profile. It’s great for our image. It shows us as a world class city,” he said.
The tournament director said the numbers were only getting bigger and bigger every year.
People who enjoy coming every year said it makes them happy to see their city recognized for something positive.
