MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Investigators with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office told WREG they are still looking for the the person behind the murder of a store clerk during a Thursday night armed robbery.
The clerk just started working their a few days ago after moving to town.
He was found lying dead at the Zorro Market on East Shelby Drive.
Customer James Rogers told WREG he was a nice man.
“It’s just unbelievable,” said Rogers.
Rogers considered Zorro Market his neighborhood store.
He said when he met the clerk for the first time this week, the two laughed and joked around.
“Just a pleasant guy. Obviously he was just starting here, had every intention of doing a good job, being a good citizen. This is amazing; very nice guy. I just cannot believe that this happened, it`s unreal, he said.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office released surveillance video of a man investigators are looking for.
It showed a man behind the counter trying to open a cash register.
Investigators said someone called for help after seeing the clerk’s body overnight.
Gary Shaw, who worked next door at Who’s Next Barbershop, said no place seems safe anymore.
“I think it’s a tragedy because in our community something like that shouldn’t happen. Everybody is here to do business and we’re a close knit community here in the shopping center. It’s kind of bad because it kind of impacts all us in the end,” he said.
Customers told WREG the clerk moved to the United States because he wanted a better life.
“But obviously, this is a sad day for our community. This is a gentleman that just didn`t deserve it. He was just trying to do his job, trying to make a living,” Rogers explained.
The store was closed.
Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office told us they’re going through the surveillance video.
They said they don’t have anyone in custody at this time.
