MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It’s been 24 hours since a shootout in the Soulsville neighborhood left two people dead and three others injured.
Many questions remain about what led to the shooting.
Memphis Police say five people were shot at a home on College Park Drive – two of the victims died. Many of the neighbors nearby say there is a lot of activity at the home where the shooting happened.
One woman we spoke to says she heard the shooting when it happened but was not expecting to see what she saw.
“Walked out to the street and saw the little boy running and he fell down on the ground,” said the woman. “It’s kind of nerve-racking.”
She says the man she saw desperately trying to run to safety had been shot multiple times. She told us that before he was rushed to the hospital, he even tried to tell the first responders who shot him.
A friend of one of the victims says he was a father, a leader, and a well-known man in the community who will be missed.
“It’s a lot of hearsay, but from my understanding, it was a group of friends that were gathering to have some fun, to play some games, just to hang out and to be around each other and to have some camaraderie And it went wrong,” said Marlo Matthews. “He was the kind of guy that made people feel good. He was a smiling, happy father. And we needed more people of his presence like that. And he was a great young man. And I hate that he’s lost his life like that.”

Police say a disturbance inside the home led to an exchange of gunfire. MPD says everyone involved in the shooting has been located but they did not clarify who fired the shots.
One of the victims died on the scene while the other died at the hospital. The three other victims – two men and one woman – were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Hours after the shooting, family and friends of the victims waited outside the hospital pleading with police for answers. Police say this is still an ongoing investigation.
Matthews says the effects of the violence here will go far beyond this street impacting family, friends, and the Memphis community.
“We can’t be losing the positive people,” Matthews said. “And we are at an alarming rate. So something has to change.”
WREG reached out to the MPD for any word on if anyone will face any charges. This was their response:
“The victims remain in the hospital. No additional updates at this time. This is an ongoing investigation.”
