MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis lawmaker says he is moving forward with legislation calling for a takeover of the Memphis Shelby County School Board following a controversial move by the board to fire its superintendent.
Rep. Mark White (R) says the details of the legislation likely will be introduced next week, perhaps as early as Monday.
White said in the past week he has met with the governor and House and Senate leadership and they are in agreement to move forward.
He said the proposal, based on action taken in Houston, Texas, would create a nine-member board of managers that would have supervisory authority over the next couple of years to “right-size” the district.
The nine-member board would be comprised of local leaders from Shelby County, making it different from state oversight of the district.
“It’s really Memphis fixing Memphis,” White said.
The MSCS board fired Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins and replaced her with interim Superintendent Roderick Richmond over howls of protest in a meeting on Jan. 21.
Several board members said they had issues with Feagins over communication with the board and financial management. However, the move drew immediate criticism from many leaders at the local and state level.
