MEMPHIS, Tenn. — WREG is taking a closer look at the new charges for the man police say dumped a newborn baby into a dumpster back in January.
James Boothe Jr. has now been indicted on five new charges. This comes after an abuse of a corpse charge was dropped after records cited “lack of prosecution.”
Over the weekend, WREG discovered he’d been charged with two counts of trafficking for a commercial sex act, promoting prostitution of a minor, continuous sexual abuse of a child and aggravated statutory rape.
Months ago, many watched in horror after a disturbing video showed a man, later identified by police as James Boothe Jr., throwing a bag into a dumpster.
Investigators said that a newborn baby was in that bag; the child was later discovered dead.
As the investigation continued, more dark details in this case have emerged.
Detectives said just moments before surveillance video captured Boothe behind the Whitehaven gas station, a 16-year-old had just given birth to that child.
Boothe was arrested the next day and booked on a $250,000 bond.
He was charged with abuse of a corpse at that time, but that charge has since been dismissed.
Now, the District Attorney’s Office says that Boothe has been indicted on five additional charges.
Court records say the 16-year-old told investigators at the time of Boothe’s arrest, the pair had been in a relationship for three years.
The district attorney’s office also said the office “continues to review the abuse of a corpse allegation for potential indictment.”
They also said, “Keep in mind that when charges are dismissed in general sessions, it does not preclude us from still pursuing an indictment and moving forward as more evidence becomes available.”
With the new indictments, Boothe is now in jail on a $1.25 million bond.
His next court date is not listed.
