MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Police Department is turning over the investigation of the shooting death of Darrius Stewart to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, MPD announced in a news conference at 4 p.m. Monday.
A Memphis Police officer pulled over a car in which Stewart, 19, was a passenger in a traffic stop Friday night and discovered Stewart had several outstanding warrants.
Police said Stewart attacked the officer when he tried to handcuff him, leading to the officer shooting him.
Stewart died at Regional Medical Center.
The officer, whose name has not been released, has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
