MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Officer Connor Schilling was reportedly attacked after pulling over a car with a broken headlight.
According to reports, passenger Darrius Stewart, 19, was shot during a scuffle that was captured on video.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which is in charge of the case, is having some trouble giving us a clearer picture of the case because they weren’t called in until several days after the incident happened.
Lawmakers said Wednesday that call should have happened sooner, and police needed stricter rules.
“What is the protocol? How many cars are expected to make scene? What are the rights of people when they’re stopped for a headlight is out?” Council member Harold Collins asked.
Both Collins and Congressman Steve Cohen wanted those questions answered and said a new agency should be in charge right off the bat after a police shooting.
Stewart was detained for having a warrant, but why he was searched to begin with remained a mystery along with why he attacked.
