MEMPHIS, Tenn. — There were piles upon piles of trash.
What used to be an apartment complex has grown into an ugly sight when you drive down Dwight Road near the airport.
“It is just an eyesore!” said Keyanna Faulkner, who lived across from the lot.
Faulkner said it has been an eyesore since a fire last September at the Marquis Garden Apartment complex.
Firefighters said the building was a safety hazard, because too many fires were happening, so it was torn down.
Unfortunately, they left the blight behind.
“East Memphis, Germantown, and Cordova. If it was out towards that way, it would already be cleaned up, but out here it seems like nobody cares,” said Faulkner.
WREG obtained emails from City Hall, and City Councilwoman Janis Fullilove that suggested the same idea, but the City disagreed.
“That’s not true. I mean we are fighting blight everywhere in this city. We are not restricting ourself or selecting where we do these projects,” said Robert Knecht with Public Works.
He said environmental crews found asbestos in those piles, and it created a new set of problems.
“If we have tested good materials and nothing came back, this would be well underway, if not done by now,” said Knecht.
He said he has been working with special clean up crews to finalize the details.
He said the money is there and expected the work to start within the next 90 days.
Faulkner hoped that’s true for her and her child’s sake.
“I have to walk my child to school, and I have to look at it,” she said.
