SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — The Mississippi man who spent the day running from Southaven police is now in custody and headed back to a familiar place, prison.
Arthur Dunlap, 21, had been out on probation after the Mississippi Department of Corrections released him in May.
Homeowners in the Southaven neighborhood where the police caught Dunlap are more at ease knowing a man on the run from police is in custody.
“You never know what they’re going to do,” one neighbor said.
Dunlap ran from cops during a traffic stop Thursday morning. He rammed three police cars in the process before he bailed and ran.
Police found him hiding in a storage shed late Thursday night. Neighbors said they are relieved he was caught, especially since he’s an ex-convict.
Dunlap had gone to prison for burglary after breaking into homes in Marshall County. However, before he was ever sentenced for those crimes, Marshall County found out he was wanted in Memphis while he was waiting in jail.
Deputies found out about the Memphis charges while watching television, on which the Memphis media aired surveillance video showing Dunlap and his distinctive tattoos breaking into cars in the city.
A judge in Mississipi sentenced him to five years. He was let out on probation after serving less than three.
“Maybe he didn’t have a good home life or something,” neighbor Carol Johnson said. “He needs the Lord that’s for sure, but he needs help. He really does, and they need to keep him until they’re sure he has that help before they let him back out.”
Dunlap is currently being held at DeSoto County Jail, where the Mississippi Department of Corrections has asked they hold him.
