GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — Hundreds were without power in Hickory Hill and more than 1,700 MLGW customers in Germantown lost power Tuesday night without a single storm cloud in sight.

MLGW often places blame on trees, fallen branches and lightening, but some people said it seems like their power is going out constantly.

People told WREG they’re prepared for their power to go out during storms, but on clear days, MLGW owes them more of an explanation.

Michael Benjamin lost power in his Germantown home around 1:30 a.m. and his house was far from the only one.

“I went for a drive, just to see how far the power outage went,” Benjamin said. “It was this entire neighborhood here, all the way up to Poplar Pike, all the way down Poplar Pike to Hacks Cross, and across the street in the other subdivision.”

Gale Jones Carson with MLGW usually mentions storms and trees when the power goes down.

But, she gave a different reason for the outage Tuesday night.

“That was due to an underground fault. It was a cable fault. Our reliability team is assessing what caused it to fault. If they that the area needs to be retrofitted, we’re going to do that,” she said.

Jones Carson also said car accidents that involve utility poles are another common cause for outages.

Benjamin said they have been happening too frequently and something needed to be done.

“A customer who says their power goes out on a frequent basis, I would have to really look at the data for that area to see actually how often it does go out,” Jones Carson countered.

Power was restored to those Germantown neighborhoods before 8 a.m. Friday.
