MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Matchmaking service Ashley Madison, who helps spouses have affairs with other spouses, was hacked.
Some 40 million profiles were released and are now public to the world.
Websites like Paste Bin sorted through the profiles, and found 15 thousand of them are government or military who used their work emails to create their account.
Among them, WREG found seven were accounts of City of Memphis employees, six with the state of Tennessee, one with a Shelby County government domain, one from Germantown and eight from the city of Nashville.
Hackers have been threatening to the leak the information since July, demanding the Ashley Madison website be shut down, because it profits on the pain of others.
Now users are dealing with the aftermath.
WREG was told both personal and financial information was leaked.
Since the data was recently dumped, it may take a while longer to find out who exactly is behind each account.
Ashley Madison said a small percentage of its profiles are bogus, because it does not verify email addresses.
