BARTLETT, Tenn. — A Bartlett couple is living in fear after two masked men armed with a knife and gun robbed them as they were walking into their home.
The couple told WREG they’re just thankful to be alive.
It happened in the upscale Davies Plantation neighborhood just before 9 p.m. Saturday night as the couple was getting home from a church event.
The wife had just walked through the front door.
“I heard this voice say, ‘give me your purse’,” said victim Debra Smith.
The husband was walking to his truck parked on the street.
“About three-quarters of the way up the driveway, I heard her scream twice,” said Mike Smith.
At that moment he knew something was wrong.
His wife wasn’t alone in their home on Davieshire Cove.
“There was this tall black male, and he had a mask,” said Debra Smith. “I saw he had an 8 inch butcher knife.”
“At the same time, I noticed a young man walking towards me on the street,” said Mike Smith. “He showed his gun and said, ‘get down on the ground.’ Well, I just took off running. He caught up and tripped me. He then held a gun to my head.”
Both were told to lie face down on the ground.
“He told me that he would stab me if I moved. He kept using the F word,” said Debra Smith.
“You are frightened. You don’t know what’s going on. I was worried about her,” Mike said.
The robbers took their cash, credit cards, cell phones and jewelry and ran away.
Police showed up minutes later and spent hours combing through the scene and neighborhood, but the masked men got away fast and are still out there.
The Smiths moved to Davies Plantation for peace and quiet, but now they don’t know if they’ll ever find that again.
“When an incident like this happens, you start to wonder whether you’re safe anywhere,” said Mike. “You don’t even felt safe at times in your home.”
The Smiths are asking for your help.
They said knowing the suspects are caught, maybe no one else will have to go through what they did.
