GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — Travis Hayes faced a fun but difficult challenge Friday morning.
He had to select at least ten items from different departments at the massive new Kroger store in Germantown on Farmington Blvd. and spend a minimum of $50 on organic items.
The catch was that in order to win, he had to come closer to $50 than the other two contestants in the Kroger Healthy On A Budget Scavenger Hunt, co-sponsored by WREG News Channel 3.
He had 30 minutes to make his selections but couldn’t use a calculator or pen and paper.
His total: $50.01 without tax. Hayes said he was pleased that was the total, but that in his mind, he thought he had spent $50.04. The other contestants were a few dollars off, but not nearly as close as Hayes.
As the grand prize winner, he received a $1,500 gift card from The Peddler Bike Shop in Germantown and a Kroger gift card.
The two runners up also won Kroger gift cards. All three contestants got to keep the groceries they selected in the scavenger hunt.
The three were selected at random from entries submitted on WREG.com’s Contests page.
Kroger opened the big new store last Wednesday.
