MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man lost control of his bike while riding on Poplar Avenue near Pauline Street at about 9 a.m. Tuesday and is in extremely critical condition, police said.

A witness alerted police about the accident after he saw it while walking on Poplar. He told police he saw a car turn in front of the victim’s bike; the car did not make contact with the bike, but the victim lost control and fell headfirst onto the pavement.

The witness said the victim was not wearing a helmet and had been riding very fast.

Police concluded during an investigation that the car indeed did not hit the bike and the victim was not wearing a helmet at the time of the fall.

The victim was transported to Regional Medical Center, and as of about 10:30 a.m., he was in extremely critical condition, police said.
