MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man was arrested and accused of trying to steal a car from a Dollar General parking lot.
There were two kids in the car.
John Shelton, who frequents the area, told WREG he believes he has seen the suspect before, hanging outside the Dollar General on Houston Levee Road.
“Are you kidding me?” he said. “I’m glad they caught him.”
Donald Evans, 33, was charged with Criminal Attempted Theft of Property between $10,000 and $60,000.
It started when a woman driving a Nissan Armada pulled into the Dollar General around 5:30 p.m. Monday.
The police report said as the woman was getting out of the car, she noticed a man outside the store on a bike.
She left her kids in the car and went inside.
When she looked back, she said Evans was pulling on her driver side door, trying to open it.
She confronted him and he took off on his bike.
When police caught up with him later at Highway 64 and I-40, Evans reportedly told them he thought the car was his brother’s.
State law said the kids were old enough to stay in the car alone, because they are 10 and 11.
Kids under seven cannot be left unattended without the supervision of someone 13 or older.
When we checked Tuesday, Evans was not facing any type of attempted kidnapping charges.
Dollar General released a statement saying, “An investigation is underway into this matter by the police, and we are cooperating with the authorities who are leading the investigation.”
WREG asked both the District Attorney General’s Office and Memphis Police why Evans was not facing any kind of attempted kidnapping charges.
The D.A.’s Office referred us to MPD, who has not yet responded.
WREG went by the address listed for the victim’s family, but no one was home.
