MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A lot of events are planned for the Southern Heritage Classic Weekend.

People can expect to see everything from tailgating to the Jackson State University versus Tennessee State University football game Saturday.

The organizer said the event should attract about 50,000 people this weekend, and that means they can expect a lot of security.

A spokesperson with the Memphis Police Department said the department is prepared to handle the crowd this weekend.

She said they plan to have uniform patrol, scooter and bike officers, skyCop Cameras and watch towers.

Fred Jones, who’s the founder of the event, said security helping out with the Classic started holding meetings months ago to help them prepare.

“So that production meeting is mostly about logistics, how are we going to move these people; around what time are they going to be able to set up tailgating, what time do the gates open up,” he said.

Officers with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, will also be in the area.

“They have the ability that if something happens, they have a command unit that they could talk to everybody at one time so all the people I named, if something were to happen, they can be notified immediately,” Jones stated.

Jones said he could not tell WREG exactly how many officers will be patrolling the area, but he did say it will definitely be more than 100.

Jones expected the event to bring in more than $20 million.
