MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The candidates battled it out at the podiums, but did what they have to say change your opinion of who should be mayor?
WREG’s mayoral debate Wednesday night brought out some heated discussions between A C Wharton, Jim Strickland and Harold Collins.
Thursday, WREG’s Katie Rufener hit the streets to find out how you thought they did.
“I thought all three did good, but I really enjoyed Mayor A C Wharton,” Memphis voter Sharon Rhoads said.
During the debate, our moderators asked the candidates your questions on everything from policing to violence and youth involvement.
Memphis resident Kelbert Pierce said the candidates’ answers did not change his mind on who should be elected, but they did solidify how he already feels.
“Mr. Strickland was saying he wants to help the people that are homeless and jobless,” he said.
Rhoads, on the other hand, said the debate helped her decide who she is casting her ballot for — Wharton, who is not the person she said she thought she wanted originally.
“He changed my mind,” she said. “I didn’t have him picked, but he changed my mind.”
Others took to Facebook to tell WREG they thought while Wharton, Strickland and Collins had a lot to say, they did not give much substance.
“I’m not sure I liked what I heard, but I want to thank you and others who do these debates,” Kent on Facebook said. “It’s important we hear from them even if they don’t say a whole lot.”
Pierce said he is grateful to have had the chance to hear from the candidates, and it’s information he will keep in mind when he heads to the polls.
“Put somebody in there that can get the job done and be real with the people and just take care of business.”
