MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Police Department has two in custody they say are persons of interest in connection with an early morning shooting where a child was shot in the face.

It happened early Wednesday morning at Peppertree Apartments.

Police told WREG a mother, her two-year-old daughter and boyfriend were asleep in a living room when someone fired up to six shots into the apartment.

Officers said the child was hit in the mouth and right ear and taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

When officers got to the scene, the mother was holding her child tightly in her arms.

“[The mother] was very out of it. Just crying and stuff. She couldn’t see your baby, because she’s in critical condition,” said a family friend.

Police said on Wednesday a security guard at the complex gave them a tip and claimed the suspect was a man who’s been banned from the property.

Investigators said they tracked down the man, and he was sitting on the couch in an apartment a few doors down.

Detectives told WREG another person was taken into custody too.

As of Wednesday night, no charges have been filed and police do not have an update on the girl’s condition.
