MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Police Department has confirmed two officers were relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation after the TBI was called in to investigate the shooting death of MPD Officer Martoiya Lang.
The TBI was initially called in on Oct. 6 at the request of District Attorney General Amy Weirich after new information came to light as they were going over the case against Treveno Campbell.
Campbell was the one charged with Lang’s death.
Back in 2012, Lang and other officers were serving a drug warrant on Mendenhall Cove, when the suspect allegedly opened fire.
Two officers were shot.
Lang later died of her injuries.
We also know officers returned fire injuring Campbell.
Campbell’s attorneys said this could impact and delay the trial coming up in a few weeks.
“We will say we are not surprised about this development,” said attorney William Massey.
Lang was the first female officer to be killed in the line of duty in Memphis, and had served on the force for 9-and-a-half years.
