MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis beauty school was shut down and accused of unprofessional conduct.

The State of Tennessee claimed Pyramid Beauty School had instructors teaching classes they were not qualified for.

The lights might have been out on Wednesday, but the doors at the school were closed after the state revoked their license.

No one is learning or working in the building on Madison Avenue anymore after the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance revealed something shady might have been going on inside.

The state said master barber instructors taught cosmetology students how to give manicures despite the fact those instructors were not certified to do that.

The state also alleged several mistakes in attendance records and students’ hours.

“That’s what happens, see. When you try to get around the law — it’s easier to do the right thing in my opinion always,” Joe Smith, Jr. said.

If the state violations were not enough, one former student told the board he “witnessed a gun pulled out on the school floor.”

“They did a good job, they shut them down,” Smith said. “I think they should be until they learn to follow the rules.”

WREG tracked down owner Leis Bryant’s other business, but employees shut us out.

So, our news crew caught up with the worker in the parking lot.

“I don’t know what happened. You tell me what happened,” a woman, who claimed she was a master barber, said.

The employee said she was clueless and claimed to not know how to get in touch with the owner.

Pyramid’s owner agreed to give up the school’s license to avoid other punishment.

The school’s license was suspended last year for other record keeping problems.
