SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Shelby County authorities said a con man is trying to scam people out of hundreds of dollars.

Deputies are telling Lakeland residents that a man identifying himself as Lt. Michael Ellis is calling around, telling them they’ve missed jury duty.

The con man then apparently tells them they can pay $500 to avoid legal consequences.

This isn’t the first of this sort of scam to hit the Mid-South. Collierville Police were warning against the same thing in September.

No word on if they caught up with the suspects making those calls.

If you receive such a call, police said you should hang up and call authorities.
