MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Halloween is almost here, but a recent study said when it comes to the holiday, Memphis is more trick than treat.

WalletHub ranked 100 of the nation’s biggest cities, and Memphis is listed as the second worst in the country for Halloween.

The list ranked Memphis based on categories like crime, safe areas to trick or treat and even the number of costume shops we have. Picking costumes that let your kids see their surroundings clearly, for example, can help ensure a fun and safe Halloween.

Halloween is all about spooks and thrills, but in Memphis we all know real dangers are lurking too.

That is why Barry Lincoln, the owner of Mr. Lincoln’s Costume Shoppe, said it is crucial parents keep a close eye on their kids.

“Walk with them as they go. You never want to let a child go by himself.”

Lincoln has been in business for 25 years, so you could call him a Halloween expert.

“The great thing about Halloween is that you can be anything you want to be,” he said. “Star Wars has been the most popular.”

But if your kids do plan on being a stormtrooper or something else with a mask this year, Lincoln said, “You don’t want to get a mask or something that’s going to keep you from being able to see, and a lot of people do that.”

Do not just drop your kids off to get candy. Stay with them.

Lincoln recommends having kids carry flashlights or something else to light them up, especially if they are wearing a dark costume.

And kids are not the only ones who have to think about safety on Halloween night.

“Call someone to drive if you’re going to a party,” one Memphian suggested. “There’s Uber, there are plenty of taxis or get a designated driver.”

Of course, once you are home make sure you check your kids’ candy to make sure it has not been opened or tampered with, and never let them eat homemade treats, unless you know exactly who is handing them out.
