MEMPHIS, Tenn. — More than 15,000 people are preparing for the Race for the Cure Saturday in the heart of downtown.
It starts at 9 a.m. in front of the Peabody Hotel on Union.
That means major streets will be closed making it difficult for you to get around as early as 4 a.m.
Greg Clarkson told WREG he plans to avoid this area during that time.
“It’s going to be bad. It’s going to be terrible, it’s terrible during the week down here; stay out from down here unless you’re attending the functions,” he stated.
Elaine Hare, the organizer, said major streets like Front, Riverside, Beale, Second and B.B King Blvd will be closed.
But the good news is most roads will open back up around 10 a.m.
“Now once the crowd moves through, roads start opening up and that’s very quickly because you know our fast runners, they actually run the 3.1 miles in 15 minutes so they’re off at nine and back by 9:15. The strollers, they’re back by 10.”
Some people said traffic is a good problem.
“Oh I think it’s fantastic. I don’t think anyone’s going to be too upset because it’s for a great cause,” said Marlene Wilson.
B.B King Boulevard and Union will open a little later after the race.
The race will end at Autozone Park.
If you’re participating in the race, you need to leave home early.
