MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The may not have known what happened, but people living at the Eden at Watersedge Apartments knew his face.

Maintenance man Sanford Howard was accused of raping a woman on Wednesday after helping her move furniture inside her home.

Police said when the 53-year-old was denied a hug, he grabbed the 25-year-old victim and forced himself on her.

The complex was a good size, but neighbors said they were never notified about the alleged attack.

Sanford wasn’t even arrested until days later.

The front office was aware of the situation.

While they wouldn’t go on camera, they said the victim’s story was hard to believe.

They said Howard is a good guy, but we found out his past is pretty bad.

Court documents revealed he has been in jail for attacking a man with a pipe, beating his girlfriend’s son and for driving drunk while trying to run an ex off the road.

Apartment management said Howard was a contracted employee from an outside an agency which they trusted to run his background.

Managers said they didn’t know how he slipped through the cracks.
