NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Malika Anderson will be the new superintendent of Tennessee’s Achievement School District.

Republican Gov. Bill Haslam and Education Commissioner Candice McQueen made the announcement at a news conference on Tuesday.

The goal of the Achievement School District is to move the bottom 5 percent of schools in Tennessee to the top 25 percent in five years.

This year, the district is scheduled to control 29 schools and about 10,000 students in Memphis and Nashville, with 27 of the schools in Memphis.

Anderson has served as a member of the ASD executive leadership team since 2012. Before coming to ASD, she led the office of school turnaround for District of Columbia Public Schools from 2009-2012, tasked with turning D.C. schools around.

Anderson succeeds Chris Barbic, the ASD’s first superintendent, whose departure was announced in July.
