MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Tigers just keep going up.
In its first list of rankings this season, the College Football Playoff committee named the Tigers as the 13th best team in the nation.
The Tigers are the highest-ranked non-Power Five team ever in the poll, which began last year.
Memphis is ranked No. 15 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and No. 16 in the Coaches poll. The CFP poll is what determines the four teams to reach the College Football Playoff to get a chance to fight for the national championship.
The current top four in the CFP poll are Clemson, LSU, Ohio State and Alabama.
Big 12 undefeated teams Baylor and TCU, which just missed the playoff last year, are again on the outside looking in, at No. 6 and No. 8, respectively, although they still have about a month to make a stronger case to get one of the coveted spots.
The Ole Miss Rebels came in at No. 18, with the Mississippi State Bulldogs at No. 20.
Memphis’ AAC foes the Temple Owls and Houston Cougars are also ranked, at No. 22 and No. 25, respectively.
The Tigers are undefeated at 8-0, including a win over the Rebels, and play the unranked Navy Midshipmen on Saturday.
