JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi Supreme Court has ruled same-sex divorce is legal in the state.

In the court documents filed on Thursday, the State Supreme Court used the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that all states must recognize same-sex marriage when performed in and out of the state.

Therefore, the court concluded, it must also recognize a divorce in the same manner.

The entire court battle began back in 2013, when Lauren Beth Czekala-Chatham and her wife, Dana Melancon, filed for divorce in the state.

At the time, Mississippi did not recognize same-sex marriage and therefore refused to grant the divorce.

When the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage in 2015, it didn’t address the issue of divorce.

Thus, began a long legal battle that ended in victory for Czekala and others in the same situation.
