MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Carlos Moore, a lawyer representing the family of Darrius Stewart, sent a letter to the Department of Justice to request an investigation into Stewart’s death.
Stewart died in July after being shot by Memphis Police Officer Connor Schilling during a traffic stop. A grand jury decided not to indict the officer on voluntary manslaughter charges, which was the recommendation from Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich.
Moore also asked the DOJ to investigate MPD for “engaging in a pattern or practice of depriving persons of their constitutionally protected rights by utilizing excessive force, discriminatory harassment, racial profiling, making false arrests, and lawful stops, searches and seizures.”
The letter referenced the more than 24 “suspicious” killings of civilians at the hands of MPD officers since 2009; none of those officers were indicted.
