MEMPHIS, Tenn. — U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen said Hillary Clinton has met with Darrius Stewart’s family.
Stewart, a 19-year-old black man, was fatally shot by a white police officer in Memphis.
Cohen said Clinton met with Stewart’s parents before a presidential campaign rally and speech at LeMoyne-Owen College on Friday afternoon.
Memphis police have said Officer Connor Schilling fatally shot Stewart during a fight after a traffic stop on July 17. Police said Stewart attacked the officer and beat him with his handcuffs when the officer tried to arrest him on two active warrants.
A grand jury has cleared Schilling of criminal charges in the shooting. Stewart’s parents are pushing for a federal civil rights investigation and the firing or resignation of the officer.
