MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Justin Fuente has officially been named the new head coach at Virginia Tech.
The announcement was made Sunday that Fuente had formally accepted the job, but he will be officially introduced to Hokie nation on Monday during a news conference.
“This is an exciting day for Virginia Tech,” said President Dr. Timothy D. Sands. ” Having just ended our regular season with another win over UVA under our remarkable coach Frank Beamer, we can all celebrate our season and Coach Beamer’s tenure with a bowl game while we welcome Justin Fuente as our new football coach.”
“I am looking forward to a bright future for our football program under the direction of Coach Fuente. He has demonstrated a commitment to excellence, integrity and the values that Hokies espouse,” he added.
Athletic Director Whit Babcock said Fuente was one of the first names on their list as a possible replacement for Beamer, and as the process progressed they became even more impressed.
“He elevated Memphis to unprecedented heights. His recruiting philosophy is progressive and comprehensive,” said Babcock. “Coach Fuente has displayed tremendous talent in evaluating players and developing young men as they strive to reach their full potential. Simply put, Coach Fuente exudes all the qualities that Hokies hold near and dear.”
On Saturday, ESPN reported the U of M football coach would be leaving to become the new head coach at Virginia Tech.
News broke shortly before the Tigers shut out SMU 63-0.
Fuente has been sought after turning around the U of M program.
