SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — More than 500 Shelby County students are experiencing some level of homelessness this holiday season.

Memphis Police, churches and musicians teamed up with Heal the Hood, a nonprofit working to keep SCS students on the right path.

They delivered gifts to some of those students who are homeless. They were recommended by guidance counselors and churches.

The gifts were collected over the past couple of weeks.

Tuesday night, the group delivered gifts to two of the 30 families.

One of the families experienced a tragedy.

“A couple of months ago, her son was run over [outside their North Memphis home]. Just 5 years old. She lost her son,” said Heal the Hood founder Ladell Beamon.

The group hopes the children realize this community is here to help. They care about them.

“This is going to be a great Christmas,” said 10-year-old Ciara Stevenson who received presents. “This is going to be a great day!”

The group will be delivering the gifts throughout Wednesday and Thursday.
