MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The MTV hit reality show “Teen Mom” may be a better influence than some might think.

New research shows it could be one of the reasons teen pregnancy rates are at historic lows.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, teen pregnancy rates dropped from 2013 to 2014 by 9 percent.  New research shows MTV’s reality show “Teen Mom” may be the reason.

The Shelby County Health Department is also seeing historic lows but said it doesn’t have data to prove “Teen Mom” or any other reality show is having an impact.

The department did say more teens have access to contraceptives, which helps reduce the pregnancy rate.
