MISSOURI –Authorities in Missouri have officially closed I-55 in St. Louis because of flooding from the Meramec River.
The roadway is closed in both directions, but an alternate route, 231, remains open.
Authorities in Missouri worked throughout the night to keep lanes on Interstate 55 open as flood waters continued to rise.
An aggressive sandbagging operation was undertaken by volunteers and emergency crews.
Other connections between St. Louis and Jefferson Counties were also closed including Interstate 44 over the river.
Flood waters from the Mississippi River have spilled over 9 federal levees in the St. Louis area.
On Wednesday, 11 other levees still face “possible significant distress.”
