MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A group of women met Wednesday evening, and they all had two things in common.
All of them raise their families in Memphis and they’re fed up with the violence plaguing their city.
“A lot of moms who are concerned about their kids’ safety,” said Kristy Glassman.
They’re part of a national organization called Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
They explained they are similar to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, but instead of focusing on drunk driving laws, their main focus is on on gun laws.
“There are many people who are able to buy guns without a background check and with a criminal history, with a history of domestic abuse,” said Glassman.
Wednesday, these ladies praised President Barack Obama’s new executive action that expands background checks for buyers online and at gun shows.
They said they’ve been calling lawmakers and the White House since the Sandy Hook massacre begging for this to happen.
While they said it’s life-saving, other told WREG it’s pointless.
Justin Dabbs works at a Southaven gun shop and said unfortunately tightening background checks won’t stop criminals from getting a gun.
“They break into someones house, they break into a car and steal them, they buy a stolen gun from someone who already stole it,” he said.
However, Glassman didn’t agree.
“If this limits just a few people, or hundreds or thousands of people, from having an access to a gun, I think that’s a wonderful thing.”
